HELSINKI (2016)

Helsinki Closeup Dark1.jpg

Helsinki is my debut performance piece. It is an oldschool spoken-word performance for the new age.

Composed of hundreds of text fragments read one by one following no particular logic, it mimics the sense of information coming at you in all directions, like a linguistic DJ mashing up our daily discussions, private thoughts, and general information overload. The source material comes from countless places. Words lifted from personal journal writing, dinner party conversations, sex chats, youtube excerpts and psychotherapy sessions, blend together in a monologue of intimacy and discontinuity. The material is not determined according to a premeditated theme - instead it digests and reflects the excess of everyday life, and its constant mixing of high and low, mystical and mundane, superficial and profound.

The piece modulates each time it is performed, following certain principles of chance and randomness. It is a work-in-constant-progress, as new source material is continuously added to its archive of words. With its obsessive impulse of documentation and its poetic recompositions of text material, Helsinki reflects a contemporary sense of disorientation, holding a mirror to a world that is increasingly marked by the dissolution of coherence, focus and ground.
